I am curious on whether NOS or old never used refurbished brake shoes are a good thing. I am thinking about the bonding and what age might do. Any opinions ?

I suppose rivited linings would be better? I'm thinking the lining material may change over time, maybe.

not an expert here but.. Chances are the nos shoe would have the asbetos included which will degrade over time. (re:lawsuits) Althoe it may not be visible, there could be significant deterioration. This may be taking "restoration" a bit too far.

rodS,
that is very interesting. Are you saying that the older asbestos types had some failure problems?

NOS brake shoes certainly contain some asbestos, but I don't think that's a reason not to use them. Just wear a mask when you remove them, as the dust will have some asbestos.

As far as durability, hard to say. I'd be more inclined to run a softer 'organic' shoe, so as not to wear the drum as much. Old drums are not getting more common, and once they're worn too far.....

Metallics and old asbestos are generally more abrasive than newer materials.

But I'm sure the old shoes would work well enough.

Cheers!

George,
I hear ya. I thanked my lucky stars when my drums cleaned up OK. They just don't make the 1 Ton drums for these old ones any more.
