I also have a 51 Chevy 3100 frame with a 235 engine. The 235 block casting number is 3769716 and the cylinder head casting number is 3836848. The 235 is bolted up to a 1951 SM420 transmission. The 51 driveshaft is the enclosed variety. Since the 55 Chevy originally came with a 235, I'm seriously considering switching back to the 235. Will the bell housing bolted to the 235 work with the Saginaw transmission or a later model 4 speed? | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy My72ChevyC10, the answer to your question is a yes and a no. Yes the bellhousing will bolt up to the transmission, but no the bellhousing will not mount to the 54 and newer crossmembers (slanted mount rather than flat mount). Both four speeds should be SM420s, only difference is in the type of driveshaft attachment, hope that helps. | | |
