Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 60 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2012 Posts: 60 | I have my heater re painted and now I'm looking for some advice on how to polish my name plates and still preserve the blue paint in the recessed areas of my aluminum special heater name plates that go on the front of the heater. Does anyone have a technique that has worked well for them? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 | I use rubbing compound on a Q-tip for items like that. Go slow and careful! | | | | | Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 133 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 133 | I cleaned mine up with steel wool and then rubbing compound. I was suprised at how good the paint looked compared to the aluminum before started. I was very carefull. Turned out OK.

I used the Q-tip cleaning method as I wanted to preserve the blue lettering. I found Testors model paint at Hobby Lobby - Flat Sea Blue is a really good match for the GMC special heater blue letters. Only $1.79. Applied with the tip of a tooth pick. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 | | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,107 | i recently was looking for paint to repaint a 99 year old brass steam gage face after final polishing. what i just got last night was this http://www.sharpie.com/enUS/Pages/oil-based-paint-marker.aspx in medium, fine and extra fine. it is an oil based paint. i had to do an immediate test when i got home and was smiling ever since because it will work for what i want to do. so if your satisfied with the colors available dont worry about removing the existing paint especially if the tag is stamped. just fill it in with the extra fine pen and then after it the paint flashes or just about dry go over it lightly with a q-tip with some thinner on it to clean it up. i know they make lacquer pens also but havent found them. | | |
