Just a quick question, where was the horn button originally on my 53 GMC? Was it in steering wheel? cause that doesn't seem like much of a button. Or was it a button on the dash like my 60+64? Thanks

It should be in the middle of the steering wheel.

Okay, that was the obvious place. I just wasn't sure because it didnt work, it didn't seem like much of a button. How do you pull off the centre piece? or just pry on it?(I don't really want to break it). Thanks again.

If I remember correctly, it pries off easily. There is a metal plate underneath with edge retainers.

Okay I will try it tomorrow then. Hmmm, my 60 has a little push button, it also seems that the centre button will not push down. On my 64, their is a abviously not original toggle switch in the dash. Thanks again. I will report back.

just because the OEM horn button is broke, don't mean it's not original! not uncommon for the horn wire to short out in the column or elsewhere, and the easy way to deal w/ it on an ol work truck is rip out the wire and replace it w/ a cheapie button from the corner store - the factory shop manual has good info on all the parts of the system, and it's not too hard to make it right

It's worth the effort to diagnose and fix your original horn button. It usually isn't anything too serious.

Hi,
The horn button is indeed in the center of the steering wheel, it has a slot that a screwdriver can be used to pry it off. They come off easily, even if the truck has been in the woods for 20 years...

Thanks for the replies. I pulled off the horn button and it came off easily. After I got that off, nothing was different, so I pulled off the contact plate (??). Then came the steering wheel. The bolt holding the steering wheel on was just finger tight. I then pulled the steering wheel off very (to), easily. I did not see much out of the ordinary (I dont know what ordinary is though). Could it be that my steering wheel wasn't(isn't) far enough down so the buttons aren't touching enough? Also, where can you get some steering wheel crack filler? Thanks so much!

Steering Wheel Crack Filler is also known as JB Weld. See other thread.
