Here we go with the gas gauge thing again..Been trying to get mine working and have previous threads..Anyway was just cleaning the glass and bezels on my gauges, and noticed the needle on my gas gauge would bounce a little depending on how hard I was rubbing..So, I hit the top of the dash, and the gauge would jump to full and back..Is this something that should happen, or does it really mean my gauge is fried from being hooked to 12V without a reducer for a while by PO?

dont know for sure but I would think it should not jump when bumped...I tried that once when I ran out of gas, still would not start,,,just kidding,Fred

I agree Fred,,tried to get mine to read before when I was out of gas..I believe it might have to go to the Big Fuel Gauge in the Sky..Maybe I can hook it up to the CD player and get it to bounce with the music

The one thing that I do know about these fuel gauges is that when I was looking for my AD truck it was not un-common to find the fuel gauge did not work,, all had been converted to 12 volts,,,like I said before I just got tired of trying to trace the problem down and installed one under-neath between my ignition and glove box, found 2 screws in the right place and just mounted it there,did not even wire it up to the ignition, just wired to the coil side of the dist....again trying to stay away from under the dash as much as possible, my neck does not like the kind of work..

I agree with the neck thing..too old to be a pretzel..Stewart Warner gauges look good..Did you say you got a sending unit from too, or can I just get a gauge that covers 30ohms?

as long as they both match up they should work, I just wanna to make sure, got mine from the good ole NAPA store,,,just make sure they match,,I had to redo mine because the sender was in the incorrect box, so make sure they match.......mine was just a weird error,I think that I paid around 65 bucks for the two..good luck with it,,Fred

Typical problem with AD fuel gauges is simply poor grounding, unless the gauge itself is really fried. It can be very time consuming to resolve this problem but once you find it, there's nothing like a work original gauge. When going from 6-->12 you need a reducer like the Runtz between the hot lead and gauge.
