where can i get hunter green rattle can automotive strength enamel? i don't need alot, but just enough to do my dash as my paint that i used has faded, and my local walmart, lowes, home depot, etc, don't carry anything green in automotive paint other than bug spit green any advice is welcomed,

enamel is enamel, not sure what "automotive strength enamel" is ..... maybe you have some auto parts stores in reach that carry rattle can enamels? doubt you'll find some specific vintage color tho

Like Red said... So find some rustoleum hunter green enamal add about 1 oz of clear coat hardener to a sprayable qt (reduced with acetone or lacquer thinner or even mineral spirits) and get happy. You can not add the hardener... but it's what makes it 'automotive'.

I'm late to this party, but because of curiosity and some knowledge of painting I searched for "rattle can" in this site.

My point is, your fading probably occurred because of inferior products and it is going to do it again. And did you use a sealer over the last finish on the dash? I recommend buying a small touch up gun and learn to use it, it is easy. This way you can buy any paint you want, add anything into it you want (hardeners, flattening base, flexible additives, flakes, etc), get the quality you expect, and save your finger from lots of stress. The little gun does not take that much more effort. That said, I still plan on painting my lower dash with "Hammerite Black" because I want that finish and the stuff is tough.

I have plenty of rattle cans on the shelf and in boxes in my shop. But also many hind sight wishes I didn't do that come with it too. Sometimes I got lazy, sometimes went on the cheap, mostly its for very small jobs where absolute color or longevity does not matter.

Like CASO says, be happy. I say, get a paint gun.

You need a UV protectant added to the paint so it won't fade. Or like the last guy said, quality automotive paint.

will oil based paint work if hardeners are added? rustoleum sells some that is hunter green in quart cans

It's just your dash... rustoleum enamal comes in hunter green a cap full of hardener to one of those tiny cans and your there. F the F, and rub your dash out once a year. The older it gets the better it will take a buff. Just put plenty on!

Acrylic Enamel not oil based. Works great. about 1 0z/qt or 1 ml/ 2 oz...

Ha, oil base is for art paintings and old swing sets.
I keep thinking your practicing for the next big job you take on. So have a good time with it, just keep the hardener out of yer' beer.

also, i meant to ask this earlier, but can i use appliance enamel for my interior? it seems to hold up well for my headlight bezel which is outside.

Appliance enamel is suppose to be a tougher finish, but your color choices are slim and rattle can finish is all you get. Avocado, bisque, white. Dash boards take a beating from the sun and people, I'd be trying to make sure it will last.

Do your self a favor and get one of these. You'll have it forever if you take care of it, clean it well.
