The starter will turn engine slowly ,then speed up to regular cranking and truck starts.
I have restarted it 6 times or moore thinking maybe new motor tight , now it seams like starter trouble . I had the kickdown switch off to clean it -two shields (like welding helment glass only thin) fell out I put them in one on each side is this right? What would make a starter drag then free up and start truck?
Motor sounds good no raps only lifter noise left them loose so not to burn valves. thanks bill :confused:

Long cables from the battery or poor connections will slow it down. Also if your starter really heating up, it probably has a problem. | | |

They should be 2/0 size cable on both the positive and negative sides. Also, is there a good clean ground strap between the frame and the block ?

It turned out to be corrosion in the cable and as it got hot it would burn off and the starter would speed up. The problem went away with a new cable.

If they're getting warm quickly, that's a sure sign. I experience the same issue with my CJ-2A. Just to check I put 2 battery cables and 2 grounds, and it cranked over fine. I thought I was real smart replacing the old worn out cables with new ones...didn't think about the size. Make sure battery is charged up too...  -Boyo
