Which carburetor should go with 1948-1950 216 engine?

I bought a chassis with engine/tranny and rear diff as a project, but the carburetor was missing. I see "Rochester" and "Carter" carbs online but wonder if they both would fit or if one is better, etc. The truck was a 1950, but the engine i.d. says that it was for a 1948 Chevrolet passenger car.

If both carburetors came off a 216 engine, they should both "fit" onto the intake manifold. The throttle/choke linkages should be the same. I think the car and truck air cleaners would be different but either will work. (wait to hear from someone else on these matters)

Some (many) people like the Carter over the Rochester.

Carter carburetors used on cars in 1948.

Carter carburetors used on trucks in 1948.

Carter carburetor used on cars in 1949.

Carter carburetors used on trucks in 1949.

Rochester carburetor on cars in 1950.

The model B Rochester was introduced to trucks in 1950.

Thank you!
Appreciate your research from the manuals.

I see carbs for $45 from scrap yards and $300 on Ebay for rebuilt ones.

As I recall the '49 Carter W-1 carbs were a one year model. Some years ago I needed one rebuilt and the kit was a special order item that was more costly than the other models.

I recently had the carb rebuilt for the '46, it was a model 616-S Carter W-1 carb and the cost was $150.

Hope that info helps.

With enough research, you'll find (on this site and elsewhere) that common experience is the Carter W-1 is somewhat cheaper to buy and rebuild, and are generally considered to be bullet-proof. Carter refined this carb through the years, with the final version starting in 1941 - I think it's the 483s - addressing the last few minor issues with the W-1.

The Rochester -as from the factory - gave a few more horsepower, but are widely known for being leaking, messy monsters. I think Carbking has said that he used to routinely have to put them in a jig to re-flatten the flanges. Other than the mess, I haven't heard that they're unreliable. I think the kits for them are reasonable as well. And they're plenty of them out there - they often show up on the earlier trucks as replacements for the Carters.

Here's carb king's page for the W-1s.

Carter W-1

Hope this helps?

THERE ARE DIFFERENCES IN THESE CARBURETORS! THAT IS WHY THERE ARE DIFFERENT NUMBERS!

Some of you have already experienced some of these differences such as the "ported" vs "manifold" vacuum take-off for the distibutor.

Use the list as is, and I would guess few issues. However, changing from one application to another may lead to issues.

At any rate, here is the list:
