Guys,
I bought a turn signal switch to replace the old one in my '59.
The problem is, I took the Assembly apart several years ago and didn't take enough pictures and I can't find anything in my '55-'59 Assembly Manual.
I have the concept of how it goes together but it's not fitting-up as it should and I really need to see an exploded view of the parts.
Here's what I have so far. The locking wedge is in place on the bucket and the switch is installed.
The Turn Signal Lever threads into a switch activation ring which pivots on a shoulder screw.
There is a finger on this activation ring that should fit into a sliding part of the switch but the finger doesn't reach. I'm baffled by this...
Also, in my baggie of parts from disassembly, there is a thin metal strip (about 1/32 thick, 3/8" wide and 2" from my foggy memory) that I can't even remember where it goes in the assembly. This is where an exploded view of that picture link above would really help me out.
I've moved onto another project but still have this one unresolved and thought I'd ask for help here... and as always, it's much appreciated!
Jerry

In looking more closely at the Assembly picture, I've spotted something that may attribute to why that finger isn't locating into the switch!
There are two roller bushings opposite of the lever that should guide the edges of a cancelling plate. Currently that plate is resting on TOP of them! That much I think is solved... I'm anxious to get home now and correct that (I'm at work.. ahem).
I still don't know about the thin leftover strip though...

Jerry - there's no exploded parts pics I know of, just the install instructions in the accessory manual - I recall that thin metal plate as providing a spring effect somewhere, maybe to hold something in place, but I'd need to look at an assembly again to refresh .... I'll see if I have one in the parts box, my pics here might help, but don't show up that piece

Thanks for the Accessory Manual link and pictures, Bill! I've been wanting to see the Assesory Manual. I'd like to find a pdf download of it to keep on my PC with the other manuals I have. It appears though, the Manual has a different style mechanism than you and I have. Ours is the same as that linked assembly picture in my first post.
I've noticed in your picture, your cancelling plate edges also registering on the roller bushings! I think that discovery will really help me. I'm just glad I didn't break that cast metal cancelling ring by tightening down the shoulder screw too much! I realized I had a problem and backed off!
Great that you remember the thin strip! I didn't mention, it also has a notch on each end... I'm not sure of to clear screws or to help lock into a position somewhere.
Like you, it being thin might lead to think it has a spring or retainer type function.
I didn't help that I also placed my column shift assembly parts in the same baggie... I somehow don't think this strip is affiliated with that but I've been wrong before!

Bill, looking more closely at your picture... I may have spotted it!
See the small springs (there are two of them)? There are edges of something showing under the cancelling ring that could easily be this strip. It is also running over the top of your wedge.
I think I can see how this would be used as a return spring in the lever action.

no Jerry, the acc manual is just simplified views, it's really the same unit .... I'll have to poke around, your mention of the shifter has me puzzling now, there is an odd spring piece in that, but I'm thinking there's a straightish one in the signal cup grin

yes, you may be right at where it is, I'll see if I can get a better pic today

Bill

Bill, I was thinking the Accessory Manual showed a different style because I recognized a part in the Accessory Illustration
that looked like a part I saw in the parts catalog where I found the switch and switch assembly pictures Cancelling Plate .
I don't have that item in my assembly.
I'm sure anxious to get home and hopefully get this resolved this evening.
I'm very optimistic about it and do so appreciate your help, brother!

that canceling plate is attached to the bottom of the steering wheel, and is what clicks the signal off as the wheel turns back, the wheels from trucks without the signals didn't have it, hopefully you do wink

Ahh! I'm with ya... thumbs_up
My steering wheel is still in storage to be restored before I install it. I bet that part is still mounted onto the wheel, like you said.
Thanks!

well, looking in accessible boxes i don't see the signal unit I thought I had for my project, hopefully I didn't give it away clearing out the spare parts pile eek you should be able to work out where that goes when you have it in hand .... now back to work before the boss jumps ya grin

Thanks for all your effort and help, Bill.
I really think you gave me just what I needed to solve this mystery.
I'll report back, hopefully with good news!
Back to work I go... laalaa

GOOD NEWS!
That edge piece was in fact the spring retainer. There are slots in the housing to capture it!
The edges of the top pieces are registering on the roller bushings and the finger fit right into the turn signal switch hole... (all this high falutin' wordology).
The gist of it, all is now assembled and working as it should. yahoo
Thanks again, Bill!
