I have a new project. 1953 3100 short bed with the side mount spare. This truck has multiple coats of paint on it. I assume this came from the factory with the sidemount, as the fender has the correct dimple in it. Would the carrier have been painted the same color as the bed or possibly black?

You are correct this option first became available in1953. I am unsure on the color though I will look through my advertising materials for some clues.

I have read that the factory option was painted body color; however, some people have reported them being painted semi-gloss black). It will be interesting to see what other people post.

I had an original paint 54 and it was body color.

BTW I have a pair of brackets that mounts to the box for a 53 (only the vertical brackets, not the whole assembly). Let me know if you need them.

Only had a couple brackets left on my '54 when I got it.
Despite being somewhat rusty, the majority of the paint was still in good shape and was the same mariner blue as the body was.

However, if it was added at the dealership or installed by the owner it might just have
been left in the semi-gloss black e-coat that the bracket was stocked in. In the case of a
3100 side-mount they would have had to paint and replace the fender with a dimpled one
but the bracket still might have been left unpainted.

The beds were assembled at the factory complete with the fenders before the finish coat
was applied so it just seems reasonable that they would also installed the RPO's before it
went to paint.

Bottom line is it could have been body color or black e-coat and still be correct at the
time of delivery, just depends on what time frame you want to restore the truck to, that is,
factory fresh, time of delivery to the customer or a year after delivery, choice is up to
you.

I have an original set of brackets and the mouting face to the bed side is primer black with exposed surfaces painted body color.
