The 235 that we transplanted into the '51 GMC just ate it's second starter (foot pedal activated).
The engine itself runs well, and I was just lowering the idle when it gave a terrible noise and we shut it off.
It seems to me that the starter is not fully disengaging from the flywheel after starting the engine, so when the engine revs it "over revs" the starter. Make sense?
Is this a starter, engine, or installation issue? BTW, neither starter was new or rebuilt, so they could have just been old & worn.
I'll be buying a rebuilt/new one today.

I'm engaging the starter, but without a spring to disengage it the engine is over-revving it... $150 starter, ruined by lacking a $2 spring! Good to know. Thanks!

I'm new to old trucks with foot starters, so I'm doing my homework "on the job." Also, I had a guy helping me do this engine transplant. I had hoped he'd catch this sort of lapse! Thanks.
