Howdy folks.

I bought an aftermarket speaker that is designed to fit into the same stock hole on the dash in my 1965 C10.

Do any of you have any tips or suggestions about putting a speaker in that location or taking it out?

Tips and advice welcome,

-W

I did that also. If you have the original bracket - it's a breeze! Tim-o

It's much easier to mount the speaker if the radio is removed, especially if it is the original "Kleenex Box" sized radio. wink Other than that it's pretty straight forward.

I purchased one of those newer speakers that has two smaller speakers from Harrison Classic Car Audio http://kenharrisonradios.com/new_page_4.htm that fits in the stock location.. I wasn't happy with the sound quality and eventually ended up going with a couple bookshelf style speakers under the seat.

Hmnn... the original bracket... well, there has not been anything in there in the almost 10 years I've owned the truck.

I doubt that it is still there, I guess I have some research to do... grin

Hot Rod John - well, it's a start, I have a few ideas on the speakers... dunno how well it will work.

Woo',
There is an unusual bracket the is used to mount the original speaker in place. I've never found any vendors that have them, but have seen several radios for sale on EBay that have the bracket included(pricy). I'm sure a person could come up with something similar that would work. I'm like you, having them mounted under the seat would work, but under my seat there is't much space available after I mounted the brackets and such for my jack and tire tools. Shouldn't take much imagination in the shop to bend some steel to work. That's my plan at least in order to get the original AM radio back in the dash. Good luck.

Woogeroo, I think I have some of the original speaker brackets if you need one. Let me know and I will dig you out one. Lyle

I sent you a pm. It might be helpful if you provide a photo of you speaker with the email.

Well folks, I poked around under there looking around today.

Not sure how this contraption installs at all.

Looking like I might need to wiggle the inside of the heater out of the way... but I still do not see how or what it mounts too.

Anyone have any photos of the original speaker bracket ?

I flipped through my 60-66 assembly manual earlier marking anything and everything to do with the speakers and the dash speaker hole with post it notes.

66Suburban sent me some photos of the different setups... trying to figure out which configuration is for what year. Mine is a '65 and I am not using the stock radio... so the one with the arm from radio to speaker is out.

HHmmmmmnnnn.

The photo I sent of the speaker with bracket connected to the back of the radio is the original setup out of my 65 K10. I am not sure of the origin of the other brackets they may be 60-63 or gmc.

Thanks to 66Suburban, I found this out, about the rubber wedge piece that goes onto the speaker, at least the kind like mine:

3838128 (NOS Gm part number)

cushion, mounting plate <- what it is called in the parts book.

----

Now, I just need to find one.... HMMNNN.

I've buzzed around a few vendors sites that deal in the NOS parts, nothing listed yet.

-W

p.s. check out this neat site :

GM Parts Wiki

a site dedicated to GM parts numbers, scans of old parts books, along with photos of the parts and their boxes/packaging.

There's one of those mounting brackets like you're looking for on EBay. I'll send you the note if you want it.

I took some photos of the speaker setup that I bought.

The rubber part in the photo is an old part, another 'bolter sent me(thanks).

my truck is a 1965, still not exactly sure how this is supposed to work.

Hmn.

Nope, never put it in, still missing that part for the front under the dash.

Haven't messed with it.
