| | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 31 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 31 | I've got a 1961 235 in my 1947 chevy pickup motor has just been rebuilt, Got it running yesterday and it sounded great! went to start it today and it's not pumping fuel. Pulled the fuel pump off worked it by hand and it started to pump, Reinstalled it worked for a few turns and stopped again!! not enough to completly fill glass bowl. Any ideas?

| | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | could be that the pump arm is worn if it's not a new pump, or the cam lobe that runs it might be worn if the cam wasn't replaced, or the gasket you used to mount the pump is too thick, or there's some sludge plugging the tank pickup or a rubber line before the pump is rotten inside and collapsing .... could start by disconnecting the line from the tank, replace it with a rubber hose into a gas can and see if that fixes it

Then pulled the pump , worked it by hand pump seemed to work ? removed the gasket tryed it again nothing! Thinking the cam may be worn but the thing pumped fine a day ago? Pulled the pump again this time I left both lines connected and tried to pump it by hand and suprise it didn't pump!! Finally I pulled the line off the carb,turned it over and it pumped gas!!! took carb apart freed up the stuck slide put it back together and started right up. Great feeling to figure it out!

If you can one of the check valves are hanging up.
It is very easy to disassemble and clean the check valves.

I felt dumb even posting what I finally figured out! But what the heck Im not a mechanic by trade and it seems like the guys are always willing to give you a hand on here and maybe laugh with you.
