Maybe it comes in thinner sizes? 3M strip caulking is a putty type substance that can be used and might work. I'm interested in what others might suggest.

It kind of needs to rub against the side to maintain some friction to stay in a middle postition but the scrapping sound just seemed off. so that's when I thought of that stuff. Like Red say's...
