The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline U-joint collar removal....

I bought the u-joint gasket set from classicparts.com : www.classicparts.com/1935-54-U-Joint-Ball-Gasket-Seals/productinfo/92-111/#.UPHDt2_efU8 to replace the ball joint collar oil seal(cork) that seems to be leaking.
Now I'm having trouble getting the U-joint collar off of the torque tube. Do I need to remove the cross member just below to drop the torque tube down far enough to slide the U-joint collar off?

When I did mine last year the leak did not completely stop.

Where do I get universal ball collar shims?
Also, what can I use instead of graphite grease for the new cork oil seal?

The shims came in the kit

they are the 4 blue paper gaskets. I ended up using only one

I would think any general purpose grease will work. I just use a bit of oil on the seal.

Thanks for the info Dads50. I wish these gasket kits came with instructions and/or diagrams labeling what was included. What are the black paper ones for?
I gotta inspect the yoke and u-joint since one of the bolts was loose inside of the ball collar. Hopefully it didn't damage anything in there.

Might the other 6 bolt-holes gaskets in the u-joint kit be for use with the 3/4 ton extension cover?

Another question:
On the narrow end of the ball joint collar, I'm replacing the gasket that butts up against a metal washer. I noticed in your Pics(DADS50) that your ball collar has 2 metal washers. Is my truck missing one?

Two metal washers sandwiching the seal.

the repair kit is universal, covers 1935-56. The black gaskets might be for the earlier trucks or as Tim suggested a rear cover.

I dont thik the washers are reproduced. if your missing one try posting an ad in the parts wanted section of the forum, or have a machinist make one for you.


I was lucky enough to have a fellow stovebolter help me out with washers and advise when I replaced my ball seals last year.

Update:
After responding to a local Craigslist ad about a motor, the seller had a torque tube they were getting rid of and gave me the washers for free! Timing is everything.

The gaskets/shims with 6 holes are for 1950-54 Power Glide transmissions.

I think I'm in the same club.

While I have the u-joint out of the truck, I can feel a small amount of play between the u-joint trunnion and bearings/bushings. Is this a sign that I need new u-joint and bushings?

When doing this project do you guys have a recommendation for the location of the jack stands for the rear? Under the frame or under the rear end housing?

Thanks for posting your video on the adjustment of the ball collar shims.
After getting the new u-joint installed and putting everything back together with new gaskets, the ball collar sleeve now leaks from the end of the sleeve and where it bolts to the transmission.
Is there any chance of stopping this leak or is this just common?
Could I put some permatex or something on it to seal it?

Luckily my leak at the ball stopped after installing the new cork seal and one shim.

But my leak at the threaded ring didn't stop after the repair.


Maybe someone else an chime in with an idea for you.
