I need the left hand threaded ones, if they exsist, for the front left side of my '43 Warbolt. Duplex Lug right hand thread | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,100 | Hy 1936only, I have never encountered left hand threaded Motor wheel nuts, and a quick check in one of my wheel hardware books revealled no such aminal. Does the whole left side of the truck use left hand thread nuts, or just the front hub? Possibly someone put a hub intended for Budd wheels on the left front? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 | Thanks for the reply 3B, the whole left side is left hand. I only need the left front hub lug nuts though as the left rear axles have the male/female stud lug and nuts for the dual wheels. I can use the same for the front left but the Motor Wheel lug nuts look so much better. I hope that makes sense. If they don't exsist I thank you for your answer. Are they in fact called Motor Wheel lug nuts or is there a another name for them? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,961 | Go to a parts store that handles larger truck stuff. Those are plain old stud piloted or commonly known as "Budd" hubs. If you need the front only, ask for 3/4 x 16 left front Budd nuts. They are still used today. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | Do you have hub or stud piloted wheels? If hub piloted I don't think you'll find left hand nuts. If stud piloted Budd wheels I'm sure you'll find the right nuts but they won't look like what you have shown.

Years ago I discovered that the center hole of a Motor wheel was a different size than that of a Budd wheel, I presume so hub piloted could not be interchanged with stud piloted wheels. It sounds like you have Budd wheels on the rear of the truck, so I would think the fronts would be Budd wheels also. If the lug holes in your front wheels are the same diameter as the studs in your front hubs then you have hub piloted wheels, and as Grigg has said "I don't think you'll find left hand nuts". The fact that you have left hand thread front wheel studs leads me to believe that you should have Budd wheels on the front of that truck. If you could post the dimensions of the studs you are looking for we may be able to come up with some part numbers for you, hope that helps. Oh, and Happy New Year! | | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 | You guys are awesome, thanks for the info. This morning I attempted to put the '53 GMC wheel on the front hub of the '42 CCKW. I say attempted because at 04:30 this guys 58 year old body is not properly warmed up so i got it up on the hub and over the studs. It would not go further. Thinking it was paint interferance i just let it hang there and went to work. Thats when I asked you guys about it. You are right, its a stud centered front hub and not hub centered. The '53 wheel are hub centered correct? I have all 10 of the CCKW's wheels and I will use them. Thanks guys you saved my back. Happy New Year to you to 3b. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 | After pulling wheels down and comparing My warbolts to the Motor wheels and Budds, I think I have Military specific wheels. The Wheel off the 2 ton did fit the 6X6 hub but would need the normal lug nuts as Grigg said. I know this subject has been beaten to death and I appritiate you guys for going the extra mile. '43 6x6 wheel Budd Wheel on 6x6 | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | First picture looks like typical Budd wheel (large countersunk lug holes) and the appropriate inner dual nut. Second picture looks like a hub piloted MOTOR WHEEL not a Budd wheel as you note. I expect the military truck has takes the Budd wheels and not the Motor wheels. Yes the bolt patterns are the same but in order to use the Motor wheels on the Budd hubs you need to be sure the center of the wheel snugly fits the pilot on the hub if there even is one. Then if that does work out I guess you'd need to put right hand threaded studs on the left side of the truck to get rid of the LH threads. Grigg

If it is some odd ball thing the military used, give these guys a call. http://memphisequipment.com/These guys specialize in military stuff. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2012 Posts: 170 | Thanks Grigg, The only reason I'm messing around with the Motor wheels is that they have really good tires on them. After contemplating the stud change out and all, I'll stick with the original Budd type as I have all the lugs, both left and right hand thread for all axles. I like the look of the Motor wheel and it is little wider. I'm going with 8.25 tires all the way around as I have no fender clearance issues. Thank you all for your time, your input pointed me in the right direction.....again, Rick. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . As crenwelge pointed out and as I suspected too you probably don't have a pilot on the hub to allow you to properly use the Motor Wheels any how.
You can buy the Budd wheel nuts new very reasonably, they're extremely common and often easier/better to replace with new than to clean up old ones.

You can have the stud holes machined to fit the bud nut converting them too stud piloted wheel. But it is most likely not worth it as it is imperative that it is done correctly or the wheel will not turn true. | | |
