Hi there..
A friend of mine went out to check an engine for me, which is for sale..

The block casting # is: 3851659 (I think it's a 292)
What do you get out of this?

Then it has some other numbers that I can't find out what means:
CON 2 and J 2 5

Does these numbers help identify the age and type of engine?

On the engine head: 4888 F 28

If this is a 292 how do I find out the age and if it's a long or a short model?

Have tried to use the list of casting numbers, but it does'nt help me a lot - Hope for a little help here

Not sure on the casting #s but a dead giveaway on a 292 is that the motor mount bolt bosses are not directly opposite each other as on all the other L6 engines.
They are staggered,as in the passenger side mount location is another 5/6 inches foward than the drivers side and the fuel pump is located behind,or to the rear of the motor mount.
Also the push rod/lifter covers are about 2 inches taller.

CON 2 refers to Conveyor 2 at the engine plant and J (Oct) 2 (2nd) 5 (1965). As far as I know all 292 are tall deck engines meaning that they have blocks that are taller by about 1-3/4" than a 230-250 which are the same block but use different strokes. Your block number was cast from 63'-66'.
This is my understanding of these engines.

The number on your head likely is from being a replacement head.

But how do you see its from the period 63'-66'?
When i look it up I just find that the engine is from 63' - 76'..
I get the date code now, but the "5" could be 75' or am I wrong??

The casting number you claim identifies it as having been made as stated. Other years used different casting numbers.

Casting # 3851659 is listed as a 292 from 1963-66
and had 7/16" Bolt Holes in Crankshaft Flange.

Starting in 1967, casting # 3851659
had 1/2" Bolt Holes in Crankshaft Flange.

my book says 1963-1972 truck

Check the engine code stamped into a ledge by the distributor. An example would be F1010UT. This source says a 292 65' engine should end in a UT or UH suffix. http://no25.chuckthetruck.com/page3.html
Sorry, no 292 info listed for a 75' engine in the above source.
