I've gotten a little inspiration from this site so thought I would post some progress pixs.

Mock up to test fit and determine O2 location.

O2 Bung location for drilling and welding.

Hole drilled and ready for welding. Headers were then sent out for HPC ceramic coating.

Where did you get the headers? They look nice.

Those would be Clifford 6=8. It's even better with the shiny ceramic coating! Will post another update in a day or two.

O2 sensor? What kind of injection system you plan on running?

Beautiful pictures! I would ask the same about the system that you are going to use.

Judging from the manifold he is either going to use projection or just use the O2 sensor for tuning purposes, which is what I am going to do at some point.

To get things running I will mount a Holley 390 four barrel. Later I plan to fuel inject, probably with a throttle body to start. Port injection would be better but haven't determined if the siamese ports will be a problem. Got to calculate the intake timing to see if there is enough time between events.

The O2 sensor is a wide band (WB) unit for tuning purposes. Most O2 sensors in cars are narrow band, ie. they simply flip back and forth around 0.450V which is 14.7 AFR. Outside of this point they are not accurate. With a WB you can see whats happening from 10.5 to 25 AFR. See WWW.DIY-WB.COM for more info.

The goal is to have the engine running by New Years Eve....we'll see.

Awesome! How accurate is tuning with a O2 sensor if you're only watching one set of cylinders?

What is the part no of the o2 setup you're using? I'm using the 390, clifford, hei, but I'm using fenton headers. I want to be able to watch out for a lean condition. Can I mount the 02 bung in one of my head pipes?

BTW, how do you change the cruising mixture on a Holley 390??

thanx

Much better than no O2 sensor! :-) Kidding aside, that is a question I can't answer. Each collector is looking at three cylinders. I expect some inbalance but it'll be so much better than nothing that I'm not concerned. The best place to put the sensor is in the full exhaust stream, second best is as much as possible. You'll see many OEM installations with the O2 mounted only on one header. Many current OEMs will have multiple sensors (24V Taurus has 4). I debated on placing the sensor in the pipe where the two collectors dump into (single exhaust) but decided against. Too far away and I need a location to tune from before the final exhaust is fabricated. Can't see it in the pictures but I have bungs in both collectors for future testing.

It's a special NTK item sold in a Bosch box. Don't remember the part number. They cost from $125-160 when you can find them. Notice that it has five wires. See www.diy-wb.com for part number.

I would imagine that you could. Maybe down aways in the pipe to save the trouble of drilling and welding the cast iron. In the "Y" pipe if you've got one.

Jets? Haven't gotten there yet.

I'm going to be running 2" duals thru glasspacks. The fentons have a pipe plug in them for hooking up exhaust heat to manifold. Im not using them, so I wonder if an O2 sensor can be adapted to fit. Or I could weld into one downpipe.

Anyway, the jets only affect mixture approaching WOT, so I was wondering how to adjust the steady-rpm cruise mixture. Air bleeds? But I don't think the air bleeds are adjustable on the 390.

You've got a manifold w/o water heat. How are you gonna warm the mixture? And will your headers clear your tranny linkage?

BTW, if you haven't got a throttle setup in mind yet, I just installed the Lokar 'Eliminator' pedal assembly. Seems to clear everything, and looks good.

Is that a '58-60 truck block?

Looks good,

I have one that I made for much cheaper than that, but it's digital. They are nifty. It's fun to watch your fuel mixture while driving. I am going to plumb a 4 wire unit in my truck when I get the exhaust sorted out.
