After a few tries, the lever from the foot pedal is not quite hitting the starter switch anymore. It will work with a 1/4 inch spacer between lever and switch.
Can the switch travel be adjusted back outwards somehow?

| | | | | Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 899 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2008 Posts: 899 | Is it possible that the starter lever that contacts the switch is in backwards? 1/4" seems like a lot unless something is interfering with the linkage when you push down. With my pedal in the up position I have approx 1/2" clearance between the lever and the switch button so your pedal should move at least that far to engage. Is this a new starter? An old post said to jbweld a nickle to the top of the button switch, I was just wondering if there is another way to clean or adjust it, or if it is time for a new switch.

Sounds like it is time for a new switch, or the need for a new contact-point on the starter.
I have gotten life out of worn down switch by taking a 2-inch length of old garden hose and slitting it so that it can be opened. I then slid the hose over the button. This worked fine for several years.
However, replacing the old button is not a very difficult or expensive undertaking.
Sometimes its not the switch that is worn-down; it is the copper "button" contact-point on the starter body. Replacing that is a little more complicated a job.
