The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Lockup?

I had just backed my truck out of the garage and took it around the block for five minutes. I parked it at the end of the driveway, then let it sit for a couple minutes.

I went to start it up again and nothing. I am getting power, and it sounds like the starter is trying to go, but the engine is not turning over.

Lastly I tried popping the clutch and it just stops.

Is the engine locked up or is there something I am missing?

Sounds like the starter might be stuck. Can you turn the engine over by hand? (by turning the fan blade?)

I did not try the fan, but I tried to turn it with the hand crank and it would not budge.

How about tapping on the starter? Sounds like the gear might be stuck and not letting the flywheel turn...

Did you try and turn it backwards because that is what I would suggest if the starter is suspected. You can also unbolt the starter and pull it off and then see if you can then turn the engine over.

I have not tried turning it backwards, I will try that tonight. I will report back this evening. Thank you for the help, and happy thanksgiving.

Pull the starter, and use a pry bar in the flywheel teeth. It should turn easily with that much leverage. Did it make any expensive noises when it quit- - - -knocks, squeals, etc.?

The engine never died, I just turned it off once I got home.... So no expensive noises. It has a tick to it, but that's is about it.

Put the truck in a hi gear and rock it a few times, your starter gear may be jammed up.

Just tried turning the fan both directions, no luck. When I hit the starter I can hear it engage, just nothing moves.

Any hints on pulling the starter?

Disconnect battery first! Thats the only hint I can think of. It's really pretty simple after that.

Yea.. Battery seems like an important part.

I will let you know if the starter fixes the problem. If it does not then I will probably have a lot of questions on what it takes to rebuild an engine.

Disconnect the ground cable at the battery, then remove the nut holding the end of the other battery cable to the starter. Two bolts hold the starter to the engine. Careful- - - -it weighs about 10 pounds or so. Don't fumble it and damage something as you lift it out over the fender!

Pulled the starter and I was able to hand crank the engine to get it to turn. Looked at the starter a little and it was turning as well. Put the starter back on, hooked up the battery and it started right up.

I'm guessing it was starter problems, either in a bind or going bad.

Thanks for the help. I'm sure ill be back in the engine shop in a few months to tackle the ticking and some other problems.

Might want to check your ground cables
