Which one should I rebuild and use on my 235 in my '53 3100? Standard rebuild nothing fancy, no performance mods on the engine

Thanks

Carter. Its a no brainer. You will enjoy good performance without leaks.

I have two on my engine.....

I replaced the Rochester on my '53 Powerglide engine with a Carter YF 2100S. My gas mileage went from 14-15 to 19-20. And the acceleration and power are better. I was fortunate to find an unmolested and never rebuilt unit, and although it was rusty and stuck, with patience and the right rebuild kit from The Carb King, It runs perfectly. Can't say enough about it.

With a proper rebuild and a carb kit from Carb King, my Rochester B does not leak and gives me 17 to 20 mpg depending on driving conditions

Bolter2,

Glad to hear that you were able to get the Rochester to perform for you. I probably have had 3 or 4 different Rochesters on my 235 over the last 40 years or so, never could get better than 15 mph and they all leaked. I really thought 15 mph was the best one of these trucks could do until I put the Carter on. It's nice to know a good Rochester will do the same.

I have always preferred Rochesters. Most of the time when they get bad gas mileage it is because the wrong base gasket was used or the power valve was assembled incorrectly.

Dave,

I guess you are right. After I put the Carter on, I decided to rebuild the Rochester, just for fun. I found that the power valve was installed incorrectly, (ball and spring in the wrong place) and the end of the power valve was split. No doubt this contributed to the bad gas mileage. This carb was a rebuilt unit I got at the FLAPS some years ago. It was also leaky.

The Carter is working so well for me that I haven't bothered to try the Rochester again. It just sits on the shelf.....

One thing I have found with Rochester's is when the float level is set correctly the fuel level is at the cover gasket level.
I do not know if the gaskets that come in the rebuild kits wick gas more than the original gaskets but they seem to.
What I do on all the ones I work on is to set the float level about 1/16" lower than called for, this seems to help with the leaking problem.
