I'll bet one of the older external-regulated alternators has a different spacing, or you've got the wrong bracket. Either way, you're going to need to modify something. It's easy to make a bracket, though. I do it all the time on racing engines where no standard brackets are available for the setup I want.

That's the right bracket but the wrong pulley. I had to remove the pulley off the old alternator and then all was fine. I have no idea what application that pulley is for but it sure doesn't work with 60's 292's!. alternator pulley As you can see, it's not that I have to use the outer pulley, it's that the inner pulley has a 3/4" space before the groove starts.
