What kind of starter (foot actuated or electrical solenoid actuated)?
Describe the routing of your ignition wiring to the coil.

the wiring is the original 70 year old harness complete with flexable shielded conduit from ignition switch to coil.

In 1942, I think you might have had some sort of Reversing Switch mounted on the starter assembly?
