Since my speedometer cable was not in best of conditions I replaced it. Gauge still didn't function. I disconnected cable at the gauge end and went for a drive, the shaft/rod did not turn inside cable which leave me to believe there's something wrong at the transmission gear end. I reconnected my cable to the gauge and hook up my cordless drill to the transmission end of the cable and made the drill turn in reverse. Gauge needle did not move. Is it possible that both ends (Transmission gear and gauge are broken at the same time?) I'm also having great difficulty in removing the speedometer gauge I can't get at the two bottom lower nuts due to the bracket that mounts from the firewall to the base of the dash behind the steering column. Is there a special way to take the gauge out? I also notice that this gauge has and additional piece that attaches to it in the back and that is where my speedometer cable plugs in. What is the purpose of that additional piece? Is it used for gear ratio adjustments for the speedometer? I've seen many speedometer gauges but that additional mounting piece is never part of the gauge.
| | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | from the sound of your troubleshooting, you may just have a broken cable inner shaft, you should be able to pull the inner piece out of the housing to check that .... nobody can give you specifics about the speedo removal without knowing the year - also it sounds like the "additional piece" may be the adapter for a 2 speed rear end, is this a bigger truck?

It would depend on if the cable was strong enough and if the gears were already worn.
Does the odometer ever change, it's direct gear to gear driven off the cable, the speedometer needle is magnetically driven off the cable. Do the gears turn in the transmission when you rotate the tires, have you watched them to verify?
