| | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 165 | I've got exhast gas in the radaitor on a 53 2 ton with a babbit 235, is the head the usual culprit as far as being cracked, or is the block prone to cracking also, I won't get it apart for a week or two at this stage.

Pull the head and look for warps or cracks, or a simple blown gasket. A quick check for warp across the top of the block can be done with a big, flat file. Draw-file the top of the block with a firm down pressure and long strokes. A uniform scratch pattern indicates it's flat enough to seal a head gasket. Ditto for the sealing surface of the head.
