The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop clearcoat

I want to put on another couple coats of clear, but i finished the base/clearcoats a couple weeks ago. Am i correct in assuming i have to wetsand prior to any new coats? If so, what sandpaper grit? Thanks, Joe

The product sheet for the clearcoat I used (PPG) called for 2 to 3 coats. I asked the dealer and they recommended no more than a light 3rd coat. Told me todays clearcoats are not like the older produts, best to stay with the instructions. My two cents anyway.

Yes you can, even though its not recommended you will be ok. basicly what you will be doing is a respray.
Wet sand with 1000 or 1200 & go with 2 coats.
You may notice that it lays down better than it did the first time.

Most manufacturers will recommend more than 2 coats only if you plan on doing a lot of sanding & buffing. Reason is sanding & buffing removes mils, which is paint thickness.
if you remove too much mils the clear wont hold up to the sun & delaminate. Thats whan you see the clear blow off in sheets a year or 2 later.

Watsjoe. I always spray 2 heavy coats of clear and then wet sand with 1200, re wipe, tac rag and relay a couple more coats of clear. Then start the color sanding process and buff. You'll get a mirror finish with great dept.
