I have a 46' with a 235 engine and I had a new rope seal installed last year and I still haven't solved the leaking problem.
Can a person realistically ever stop the leak with a rope seal, or is it something you just have to live with. Thanks.

If you used a seal from a modern kit, then its probably a bad seal. The manufacturers took out the asbestos years back and the seals just fall apart with out it. Best Gasket Company now sells a very good replacement. It holds together like the old stuff and works great.
