hiyas folks.

I have a '65 c10 - and recently I found out(a few days ago) that the 60-66 trucks did not have the button for the hazard lights on the column - but the 67-72's did/do.

So, it appears I have a later column in my truck... go figure - everythign is is a different year so it fits with the motif. smile

Anyhoo's - I am trying to figure out which of the wires coming from the steering column is the wire for the hazard switch ?

The switch doesn't do anything at the moment, I thought I'd try to figure out how to make it flash...

Anyone have a good idea on what flasher to get to go inline on the wire?

Thanks for anything ya'll can come up with...

See if you have a brown wire unused at the bottom of the column, if so hook it to 12 volts thru another flasher. Brian

thanks fellas...

the wires I can see at the bottom of the column, then it is wrapped and wrapped in electrical tape all the way to the fuse box - so I was looking for a place to start.

thx.

I see the brown wire - it comes out at the end of the coulmn and in the many wraps of electrical tape it is cut off. smile

I had this advice from dval on 60-66 truck forum at chevytalk:

Find the hazard wire on the column harness. Find a 12 volt ( ignition off ) source on the fuse panel. Connect the hazard wire to the 12 volt source WITH a Flasher Relay in the Middle of the Connection. Instant hazard lights.

----

now, my question is... I wander into Advance Auto parts and tell them: I want a flasher unit 12v....

then they say, what year... what make, what... etc..

So... anyone have any tips on that part of the equation?

Just a two prong flasher, a 552 should work fine. They are near the bulbs, connectors etc. Brian

I got the flahser wired up and now I have hazard lights! woo hoo!

I used the 552 flasher as 64Fleetside suggested.

I also put a inline 20 amp fuse in place, just in case. I'm guessin' that is enough... not sure if it is too much tho'.

How I wired it:

I have a wire to the 12v ignition off source, to a 20 amp inline fuse, to 1 prong of the two prong the flasher unit, then a wire on the other prong to the brown wire, which leads to the switch. Then I zip tied the flasher unit up out of the way. smile

The it took about 5 mins after I had found the correct wire on another day... I put an extension wire to it, took a wire that I have with alligator clips on each end, clipped one end to a 12v source and the other end to one of the prongs, then slipped on the new wire on the other prong - pulled the switch and it worked.

The most time took for this project was finding the right 12v ignition off source, then wiring everything up right.

The reason I put a fuse inline, was I was burnin' out a fuse on another source I was trying to use... so, just to be safe I added one in the new place. smile

The thread on chevytalk - where I found out about the hazards and things:

http://www.chevytalk.org/threads/sh...ge=0&vc=1&PHPSESSID=#Post1189699

this tip was in the thread as well, didn't see it until after I had wired it up, but it's a good idea:

GO IN TO YOUR LOCAL PARTS STORE AND PICK UP A HEAD LIGHT PLUG AND A FLASHER . THE FLASHER WILL PLUG RIGHT INTO IT

Anyway, if anyone is searching in the future and they find this thread, they can check it out.

Thanks to everyone!

Hiya peoples...

My flashers still work great, but when they are on and I hit the brake pedal, they stop flashing. The light are still on but no more flash-flash, when I let off the brake pedal they go back to flashing.

Is this normal or do I need to check something?

Woogeroo,

This is a guess. If the hazard flashers are blinking brake lamps, then the flasher must be bypassed and allowed to indicate a 'steady' STOP when the pedal is depressed.

Woogeroo,
Coincedence--my 65 c10 is the same as yours --it has a hazard switch on the column that does not work. I tried to figure it out but not being wire enlightened gave up. I have to change my steering wheel, get my signals to cancel and hazard lights to work. Your questions and answers have given me a direction to go in. I wonder why the switch is on there and not wired--well at least it's there.
Try again tomorrow....

Woogeroo,

I believe this is normal. At least thats how mine work and it makes sense to me. Of course, I hooked up my hazard flasher myself and don't know anymore than a first grader.

Your brake lights should come on and stay on when you are depressing the brake pedal. That way drivers behind you then know you are braking.
