Just curious to know whether anyone has done this. I see that Cletis has posted a how-to on a 56 with a wide rear window. My truck has the small rear window and a different layout with the B-pillar. I'm not sure how to get behind the sheet metal without cutting a pretty good size hole for access.

I welded a 3/8 inch rod to the nut and washer and pushed it up to the hole and screwed bolt in and left the rod in, you can't tell it is behind the pillar(the rod). There is a picture in the link at my signature.

So you didn't weld a plate to the back side of the sheet metal? Did you have any trouble with the rod rattling around inside?

Joe - tack weld a nut to a plate or large fender washer, epoxy glue a thin stick to the plate, do as Larry suggests, once the bolt is tightened, break the stick loose and pull it out

Mine does not rattle but I believe red58's idea is the best. I used the large fender type washer also.
