For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 1,586 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 1,586 | I decided the A833 transmission is going to fit the 51 one way or another,so the stock shifter linkage needs modification to locate properly in an AD truck. The Saginaw in the truck now has a Hurst shifter I re did to clear the seat base. The A833 is a larger tranny but I was able to relocate the shift tower almost in the same location.I cut the bracket with a hand held band saw, and welded the pieces like this.... reworked stock mounting bracket .. Of course ,before finish welding, I had to tack all the pieces together and check for binding and proper movement. This operation pushed the shift tower foward about 3 inches ,next the rods had to be shortened. This factory shifter is a Hurst unit with hardened rods, had to use an angle grinder to score through the surface ,then finish with the saw, the grinder left a nice relief to fill in with weld.... semi finished product | | | | | Joined: Mar 2001 Posts: 384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2001 Posts: 384 | Fairly elegant solution. That tranny appears to me to be a little larger on top as well diminishing the space between the cab floor plate and the top of the tranny. Ive got a hurst 3 speed floor shifter in my 55.1--quite similar--I'm right up against the base of the bench seat but hope to get some more space by removing the gas tank and moving the seat back. I would like to hear how that tranny performs when you get it all installed.

Anybody else trying this, especially if you don't have rods to modify, you can also use Hurst 373 4089 installation kit for B body Mopar. It had the shifter in that forward position as well and uses the short rods. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 687 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 687 | Tony,
Is that $75.00 the price you paid for that priceless tranny? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 30 Member | | Member Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 30 | The 833 must have come with some variations on the shifter. Mine cleared the seat base of my 46 w/o rework. All I had to do was heat and rebend the stick to get it out of the seat in 2nd & 4th. Anybody thinking about doing this should look at the shifter unless they have Tony's talents. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 1,586 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 1,586 | Ftyler, actually it cost me 25 bucks, the swap meet seller was asking $75, I told him I would give him 25 bucks and pick it up later. I meant 25 now and 50 later, he thought 25 was my offer and couldn't take it fast enough. Just as well, the tranny cost me a few hundred bucks to repair. Richard, the linkage came off another Chevy A833 I have, the kind with the Mopar bolt pattern.Did your tranny clear the crossmember on your 46? This trans will be real close, the crossmember may need some minor hammer adjustment on the 51 truck with a stock bellhousing | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 687 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 687 | Still sounds like a good deal. I'm out of just under 400 for mine. Like you I got a steal of a deal. Mine came to me completely disassembled. But the p/o had taken the liberty of media blasting the case and really cleaning each and every piece of the internals. The gears were like new. I bought a rebuild kit that included new brass rings, synchros, needle bearings, etc. The shifter even came with an adapter that positions the shifter well in from of the bench seat. I just hope the old guy who rebuilt it knew what he was doing. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 30 Member | | Member Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 30 | Tony- Yes it cleared the crossmember (I assume you mean transmission crossmember); I had to grind on the rear engine/bellhousing crossmember and the lower right front of the trans to get it to mate to the bellhousing. Mine had the Chevy bolt pattern. I don't think that was how it was supposed to be but I think somebody massaged the rear engine crossmember with a crowbar when they put the 235 in it
I looked last night and my stock shifter is in your "modified" location, so there must be variations out there-- anybody buying one--look where the shifter is because if it's not where Tony's modified one is, it may not fit in your vehicle. | | |
