I am needing a carb for my 230 65 project. Will a carb a guy took off a 292 work? Thanks!

It will work, but not as well as a smaller carb for a 250/230. Use it till you get the right one.

It will probably run LEAN, not rich! The larger area will reduce the venturi velocity.

Jon.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.

Then maybe it could actually do okay here? I'm at high altitude and everything always runs rich here. In order for anything to run proper it has to be rejetted to run leaner here. I'm at 7k-8k feet.

I'd try it. I have put the larger carb on a 235 & it ran like a V-8.

Interesting, I'm looking forward to getting this thing up and running. The engine is a 230 that was completely overhauled a few years back then sat in storage. I got it to turn pretty easy so everything looks good so far. They also did the hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel.

Just my opinion, but making a 60 cubic inch change in engine size will make it run way too lean. I swapped a carb intended for a 292 Ford onto a 239 flathead once, and it had a horrendous flat spot just off idle unless I was very careful with the throttle opening. The bigger venturi drops the air velocity and internal vacuum in the carburetor bore enough that it has trouble flowing any fuel at all into the airstream. Bigger jets help a little, but not much because the venturi vacuum just goes away at low to medium RPM.

Most auto parts stores sell rebuilt carbs for the 230-292. Its just a guess which one you will get, they swap parts including the housings and most seem to get them running ok, If all you have is the 292 bigger bore carb, then run it and see what happens, your altitude may make the difference.

Someone on this site might need it if it doesn't work out. I see the smaller ones on e-bay all the time. I like to by cores and rebuild them myself. $15-$20 for decent looking one less if missing parts.

Yeah, I'm going to try and run it if not I'll find the right one. This one was removed off a running 292 that a guy was going to install a 4 barrel. There still a sticker on it that says "remanufactured by holley" I'll easily get my money back on it on e bay. There's still a good chance the original carb from my truck could show up. Last weekend we were looking through a bunch of parts my dad has spread out in his barn from when he moved and we found a lot of little things for this engine like the distributor, water jacket, fuel pump. It might just surface. We'll see.

That carb you have thats "rebuilt by Holley" could very well be a 250 carb. You just never know what they are till get in a measure the bole size.

I've dug up this old topic and wanted to update you all. I was finally able to start up the old engine this past weekend and I quickly got it to purr like a kitten. Even without exhaust the 230 idles very smoothly and quiet. Needless to say it looks like the carb I got for $20 is going to work great. I just need an exhaust and some tires and she'll be road worthy. Thanks for all the info.

Looking good so far- - - - -I'd be interested to see what the throttle response in high gear from about 30-50 MPH is. That's where over-carburetion usually shows up. The engine just seems to be "flat" with little or no pulling power unless a very light touch is used on the gas pedal. That's also the primary problem with a set of dual carbs on a stovebolt engine with venturis that are too big.
