I have a 1956 Chevy 3100 235 i6 with a sm420 4spd transmission. This is my very first build.

The motor was seized up so I thought it would be cool to tear it down and rebuild it.

I removed the transmission from the bell housing and pulled out the motor.

Here is my problem. I removed the top 2 bolts on the bell housing and the two bottom bolts in between the flywheel and engine block inside the bell housing. I can not seperate it from the motor. The clutch and pressure plate is still on the flywheel.

Are there any more bolts that I need to remove? Since I can not turn the motor, I do not know what to do. Any ideas? I have removed the head and poured oil on top of the pistons and the guy I bought it from poured oil into the spark plug holes a week before i got it and the motor will still not budge. After I get the bell housing off I will finish tearing down the block on an engine stand but I can not get to that point. Thanks

you have to take the flywheel off, there are bolts behind it. Kinda like one of those chinese trap things.

There is a total of 6 bolts,4 from the inside toward the engine and the two top ones.

you might have to take the oil pan off and see if something in the bottom end is broken and keeping it from turning over.

Remove oil pan, harmonic balancer, gear cover, remove lifters, cam shaft, front motor plate, remove main caps, rod caps, rod bolts.. Now you can roll the crank out of the block. We do this to many locked up engine we get in......

Thanks guys, I found four of the bolts as stated. I called Patricia in Az and he first told me to get a working block then he told me that basically what you guys said that I would have to remove everything and pull the crank and flywheel together.

Since this is my first stovebolt tear down I really love it since I am learning so much. I have to put the wrenches down and walk away frustrated but I keep coming back with a smile on my face.

Thanks everyone I really love reading everyones posts.

finally after numerious choice words i was able to remove what was needed to remove the clutch housing. I went to a few car shows in las vegas this weekend and went to town i was able to see the other two missing bolts and once removed it was one of the best feelings. Now I am off to the machine shop for the good or bad news. Thanks again folks I could not done it with out you.
