I am working on a 53 ford 2 door the motor is free and spins so I am going to get new plugs wires ect ect and see if it will start. I am going to drop the fuel tank and blow the fuel lines out hopefully it will start. my question is can you get an electronic distributor for the flat head ? I searched e bay but only a few new models came up so I thought I would ask all the gear heads here thanks all for the help

By 53, the flathead distributor had moved from the end of the camshaft to a housing ahead of the right cylinder head. It could be converted to some type of electronic trigger unit like a Pertronix, or you could adapt the MOPAR magnetic trigger system to the Ford distributor and use its pulses to fire a GM-type HEI module. Some of the Ford distributors use an oddball spark advance system with no centrifugal advance and a vacuum advance that works on venturi vacuum, not manifold vacuum.

I am running the pertronix unit on my ford f6, ford 600 tractor and 52 chevy 1.5 ton. be sure if you go that route to order the right one as they come one of two ways for the ford. six volt positive ground and twelve volt negative ground. you do not need to remove the distributor to install them. I am very pleased with the performance and money well spent in my opinion. hope that helps
