Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a universal backup switch for a floor mount 4spd? I have no backup lights, and I am assuming that it is because the shifter was moved from the column to the floor. I assume that this also means that the transmission isn't original.

So, is there a universal part that I can install? Or do I need to find something specific to the transmission?

Sometime in the late 50s I believe, there was an optional switch that mounted on the shifter tower to control a backup light. I have seen it but can't remember the details.

yes, there's a back up light switch 'kit' as nix says - you might be able to find something 'generic' at a parts store, or try a post in the Parts Wanted or keep an eye on e-bay, they come up occasionally - consists of a mount for the switch and a tab on the lever that depresses the switch when you move to reverse

There was a fed govt required backup sitch on SM420 transmissions in its last year, 1967.

yes, the setup in the Flickr scan, and the reference at Carters was available as an option at least from the 55 2nd

I think Lokar makes one for auto trans linkage - might work on a manual setup ?
