What is the quality of aftermarket tailgates? Is the steel gauge as thick? I know it will not be US Steel.

I was looking at mine and it seems really pitted - maybe once it is sand blasted it may be a bit better. darn they made those things solid back then.

It seems sacrilegious to rip the heart out of "Made in the USA Twice" Chevy with an aftermarket.

Thoughts?

Mar-K makes a very good tailgate, made in the USA. Back in the early 90's I bought a NOS GM tailgate for my 54 3100, and several years ago bought a tailgate from Mar-K for our other 54 3100. It was just as good in every respect as the GM tailgate. I didn't mic the steel, but it appeared to be the same gauge.

I bought mine from Jim Carter. Quality was OK / fit was good. Have no idea where it was made.

The tailgate from Mar-K is excellent, and the proper gauge steel. Terry
