So I picked up a 51-53 Chevy half ton rear axle housing to swap my 47 AD to bendix brakes. I have the housing just about de-rusted and ready to paint, but I'm having a heck of a time trying to get the bolt out that holds the spring seat and metal bushing in place. I looked at buying the new spring seat bushing from Chevs of the 40s and it comes with a new bolt and nut. Does that nut replace the apparently welded on 15/16th nut there now? And would it be a good idea to just cut the nut off the mount for the spring hanger? I don't want to just start cutting and accidentally ruin the mount.

What is the part number from Chevs of the 40s. I didn't know that they sold them.

Probably this part/bolt? This part/bolt has been recently discussed. It is not exactly like the original but is easier to install (and it works fine).

Does your old part not have a nut on one end?

You might have to use a press to get the old bolt out. And, you will have to clean the old rubber out of the housing. freeze the new part/bolt and press it into the housing.

If I am describing the wrong part, let me know and I will delete this post.

By the way, is the 47 torque-tube the same length as the later torque-tube? I think that one of the transmission lengths changed after the 47 model year?

Thank you. Was there a thread a while ago discussing whether the original had the steel on the outside?

Yup thats the one. It does have a 15/16th nut on one side, but you can see where it is welded to the bracket on the axle so I guess I'll carefully be cutting it off. I don't know if the floor shift 3 speed changed the length of the torque tube, but I just bought the housing and not a new third or torque tube. I was just going to bolt the old stuff up to the new axle housing. One more question. Are the seat mounts actually suppose to move in the bracket or are they suppose to be keyed in to roughly 90 degrees in relationship to the bracket? The ones on the new axle don't move and I doubt that when I remove the axle in my 47 that they will be inclined to move either. Thanks for all the advice there sure are a lot of ins and outs working on this old truck.
