hey guys, I wasn't logged on when I sent this message the first time. Forgive me if it comes up twice.
Having trouble with head lights tail lights and brake lights. when I step on the brake it blows a fuse. I can't seem to find a short anywhere. this is on a 64 chevy fleetside 230 6. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

You definately have a short to ground somewhere. Do you have a multi-meter? You need to wring (check for continuity and grounds) your wires. I'd start on the wire from the switch to the tail/brake light connector. Unplug both ends. If it's not there then check from the connector to the light sockets.

Clint: Wife says don't step on the brakes.

For a direct short: If you wire a bulb in place of the fuse, the light will illuminate as long as you have a short. Then you can move some wires around and find the area that has the direct short. (If the wire is up against the frame or somewhere like that, the bulb should go out when you move the wire away from the ground source.) Also, don't forget to test bulbs first, sometimes they are shorted in their sockets.

Try also the brake switch itself. (Bypass the switch by connecting just the wires to each other.)

CHECK THE PIG TAILS AT THE TAIL LIGHTS I FOUND THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 51 MERC PICK UP THE SPRINGS THAT PUT PRESSURE ON THE BULB CONTACTS SLIPPED SIDEWAYS AND MADE CONTACT BLOWING TAIL LIGHT FUSE AND BRAKE FUSE.CHANGED THE SPRINGS FOR RUBBER TENSIONERS SOLVED THE PROBLEM

I think I found the problem. It was in the pig tails at the tail lights. thanks everyone for your input. You really helped me out.

There is another possibility, although it is a rareity. You may have a tailight bulb that is grounding out internally. It's a one in a million chance but it happens!
