I'm running a mono-jet carb that wistles at idle and when driving at low RPM. I just bought the rig not too long ago, so I haven't messed with it too much. I haven't been able to locate any vaccum leaks and can't find any loose bolts. Any ideas?
I'm not too worried about it, because it runs great, it just sounds a little odd.
I've learned a lot from all you guys. Thanks!
Steve | | | | | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 Member | | Member Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,897 | .Sounds about normal for every inline-6 cylinder with 1-barrel carb I have heard without an air-cleaner.If you put a vacuum guage on it and you get a steady 17inHg + of reading at a warm idle, it is nothing to be concerned about.
There is enough good in the worst of us and enough bad in the best of us that it does not behoove any of us to criticize the rest of us.

I could usually make it do it when I messed with the idle mixture. Certain speeds and mixture combintations led to the whistle. I just richened it a tad to eliminate it . I cannot remember if you could hear the whistle with the air cleaneri installed, but definintly without it! Great car, great engine- very reliable and smooth. | | |

if it dosen't need fixed, break it
| | | | | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 258 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 258 | Steve, If there are no vacuum leaks, I'd say it's normal carb aspiration going on, particularly if there's a small aftermerket air cleaner; the Rochester "B" on my old 235 Chevy stovebolts, particularly the ones with the small "truck air cleaner" (no silencer) whistled like hell, particularly at part throttle; I've grown fond of that noise- driving an AD Chevy would not be the same without it!

The original air cleaners are a lot of metal and break the sound fairly well, but the more popular replacement filters with exposed filter will transmit the venturi whistle almost as if there is no air cleaner on it at all. | | |
