Wondering if someone out there has had good experience with a certain brand and part# spark plug. I checked the Champion website and they offer no plug for a 216 application, at least as far as I can tell. Surely there is a plug out there that has the correct heat range for regular ol city driving. Thanks.

Depends some on the year model 216. Some had a smaller (10mm) threaded plug if I remember correctly. If it is a standard 14mm plug then AC R45 should be a good plug for that engine. Champion Number would be RJ8C. Autolite is 303

Its a good idea to use thr extended tip plugs. Like R45S in AC or the equivalent in the other brands.

Why? R45 work great, and I have been told the extended tip could cause issues with pre-ignition. Don't need holes burnt in piston.

I have tried several brands of plug and have had the best run out of AC.

The extended tip plugs run cooler then the recessed tips. The tip is out in the comp. chamber & the gasses flowing by cools it. When the ext. tip came out in the 60's all the car cos. immediatly started useing them as original equip. Except on flatheads. The only reason the old manuals dont show them because they are reprints from the original. I have been useing ex. tip plugs for 50 years on every thing I have serviced except flatheads, & have never blown a piston.

+1. Plus, wih the low compression of the 216 I really cant see how detonation could ever be a real problem with modern fuels. Unless of course the timing was WAY off (advanced). I recently purchased 1964 Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible (been sitting for over 25 years, still not running as I am going through the fuel system now). The turbo corvair engines are VERY suseptible to detonation and most of the Corvair gurus (and major part suppliers) recommend the extended tip spark plugs. Just sayin....

I'll have to disagree, but it's your engines, not mine. So long as you haven't had a problem, keep doing it.
