What would be the better option buy a after market chrome bumper. Buy a after market stainless bumper or just have my bumper rechromed. This will be going on a 51 3100. What are the pros and Cons to each one. Let me know thanks

After market chrome, Poor thin most only two process plating. will bend easily compared to original. Least cost.

After market stainless, Light scratches can be removed and still look good, will bend easily compared to original. not quite the shine of chrome, Lower cost to re chroming.

Re chromed original
, highest cost but highest quality (if done right)best appearance.

of all the repop bumpers ive seen, id rather paint my oe chrome bumper then have one of those thin crappy chinese chrome bumpers. I havent actually seen a stainless one in person, but i have to assume its not much better, but at least it cant flake in a few months.

I'd use a stainless steel bumper if they had one for 1954 rear, and as long as the gauge was right. I have chrome Chinese front and rear 1954 bumpers that have a gauge close to the original chrome and painted bumpers. I do not yet know how well they will last (but, if the chrome does not last, I will blame it on the American importer's poor specifications and/or poor quality assurance).

What gauge is the oe bumper and how do I tell if mine is oe or after market. I assume my bumper had been rechromed at one time cause its nickled in the back the person I bought it from had a lot of chrome done on it at one time axle, leaf springs ect.

FYI, there various grades of stainless steel, some will rust, there is enough iron in it for many tiny specks of rust. The typical grades used are 303 and 304, 303 will rust, 304 will not.
