My 55/2 6 cyl starts great when cold, after driving and stopping is hard to start until it cools. Sounds like a battery drag. Thinking starter but looking for some clues.

Could be starter dragging. Could be weak battery when it gets hot. Could be the timing is too far advanced.

Check the battery first to make sure it isn't heating up and weakening. The look at the ignition timing. If both those check out ok, then go to the starter.

Lousy grounds will do the same....battery ground to the starter mount bolt, a ground strap between the starter bolt and the frame, and one from the same spot to the body.Check the EZ stuff first thumbs_up

I'll check the grounds. After it cools, it starts strong just like the battery has full charge, which is making me think starter or something besides the bat. Thanks

I had the same problem and found out that the battery cables had just a little green on them. Cleaned up all the cables and grounds and she's good now. Didn't think something so small would create a big problem like that. Something to look at.

I also had this problem with my 1951 Chevy 1/2 ton - even after replacing the battery, having the starter rebuilt, replacing both battery cables (with the proper size wire for a 6 volt system) and the ground cable from the engine to the frame. I finally took it to a mechanic who said there was about a 1 volt drop with the negative battery cable. He replaced it (it was a relatively short braided cable that connected to the frame) with one that now connects to the engine block. My problem immediately vanished. It now turns over just as fast when the engine is hot as it does when it cools off.

You have some good sugestions here. Make sure the cables are the right size. A lot of these cables at the parts store are undersize. They look good but are all plastic.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.
