use two 6V batteries in parallel to charge them, and a DPDT switch wired between them to change parallel/series to get 12V when i need it.
how could i do this with just diodes to isolate them
is there a dc dc power supply that doesn't cost $300
has anyone made one from old microwave or TV parts
i'm serious

Install a 12 volt alternator, replace all light bulbs, add resistors for the heater fan, gas gauge, and a new battery is a lot less than $300.
And you still use the 6 volt starter, so your engine cranks twice as fast.

It just isn't as good and it isn't compatable with anything else. I pondered using a series/parallel switch for a 12/24 volt system but found out that they are expensive and not very reliable.

Six volt batteries don't live as long as twelve volt models do (IMHO). Had my generator "re-wound" for 12 volts and a new regulator, bulbs and battery. Even when the battery is half dead, it will still start easily..............also got rid of the positive ground that GMC was so fond of.............you just have to switch the wires on the ammeter so it will read correctly and put a resistor in the hot wire to the gas guage so it won't burn up  .

A 12 volt battery with 500 cold cranking amps has twice the power a 6 volt battery with the same cold cranking amperage rating does.
I run 12 volts in my Chevy but think I will keep my GMC 6. I can understand some people want the oringal sound of the 6 volt starter and horn.

Problem was they will only convert 6v -ground. keep you eyes open at a flea market or on e-bay, found one at sally ann one day for $3 working. | | |
