Just received the carrier kit I ordered from Jim Carter. The long portion fits in the sloped track as it should. But I'm wondering if it's too long for my truck. In the upward position, it extends to the back of the truck, directly below the tailgate.

I also have no idea what the shorter bracket is for. Would anyone happen to have a photo of a complete installed spare tire carrier?

I love this website, but I have to say, it's got the worst search function I've ever come across. Perhaps it's me?

Thanks for your help as I figure out my first Stovebolt rig!

Consider it a function in developing patience.
BTW you will get more help in the forums by posting pics of what you need. My first thought was of a side tire carrier. Good luck.

Great pictures. Quick question....does the smaller C bracket bolt to the wheel, or to the bed rail? Obviously, bolting to both would make the spare a somewhat permanent part of the truck!

It's held in place with the two nuts to the carrier

Not to the bed

Only the j hook bolt holds the carrier up

Ok...to make sure I'm clear - The wheel bolts to the C bracket (carrier). The only attachment points to the truck are the J hook on one end and the pivot on the long bracket at the other end. Talk about low-tech. Guess you need a wrench on-board to remove the bolts from the spare in the event it's needed for its intended purpose.

My valence doesn't have a hole for the J hook. Perhaps it was replaced with the wrong valence at some point over the years? Unless advised otherwise, I'll drill one.

If you dont have a lug wrench you wont be able to remove your flat. same wrench should be able to remove the nuts for the carrier.

there is another style carrier

your truck could have used that style above

If you do drill the hole be sure to reinforce it well.

Possibly the previous owner changed the bed and it came from a newer truck
