Since you show both upper-case and lower-case letters, can we assume that the "f" in f630AE is a lower-case "f"?

Head and block casting codes, and head and block date casting codes, might help.

It's a '58-'60 Passenger 235, Flint plant on June 30, originally with a manual trans. It could possibly be up to a '62, but my guide cuts off with Passenger car engine codes at '60. There is a casting date near the starter that will help peg the year.

I have a 1955 2nd series 235 with this number on the pad behind the distibutor FI0I7B, if you click on the link at my signature you can see a picture. What year engine do I have?

Thanks

It's a '57-'62 Passenger engine, built at Flint on Oct. 17, originally used with a Powerglide/Turboglide. You'll need to get the date code near the starter to get the year.

Does this mean it has hydraulic lifters? What will the date code look like, I tried to look there and the starter is almost covering up something but it is hard to see.

All 235 passenger car engines from 1956 onwards had hydraulic lifters.

Was a Turboglide transmission used with a 235?

I can't answer that it would seem possible in the later years that a turbo could have been used. I am still stuck on the fact that I have a 1955 truck with a later engine that came with hydraulic lifters, when I got the truck it would barely run and after major tune up still had dead miss on number 4 cylinder. I got it hot per instructions and removed valve cover to adjust valves and number four intake rocker was off the valve so I adjusted it for solid lifters and it runs like new now, so do I readjust for hydraulics or how can I verify lifter type?

Thanks

Larry

After further research, no, they were not. When I looked the code up, it only listed it as being used with "Automatic Transmission", but did not specify type. I've rechecked and cross referenced my guides, there are specific listing and codes for the V8 with the Turboglide, and no listings for 235 with any automatic other than Powerglide in Passenger.

Thanks for all your help, I am going to try to get the numbers above the starter tomorrow to verify the year on mine.

Bill,

I think that someone posted information that confirmed that a Powerglide was used on a truck sometime between 60-62. It was not clear what lifters were used.

Yes, it was. The code for that engine would be JB. I beleive they were solid lifter, though, as the shop manual doesn't show a listing for a hydrualic cam in the 235, only for the V8s.

Longbox,

The only legible number is J 11 right above the starter, is this a good date code? The other code is FI0I7B on the pad behind the distributor. If you look at the picture of the pad the only numerics are the zero and the seven, did they use an I for a 1?

Thanks

Larry

Maybe J 1 1 means October 1 1961 ?

F1017B in 1961 would mean:

F = Flint, MI assembly plant
10 = October
17 = 17th
B = Regular engine (235) in a passenger car equipped with a Powerglide transmission

I and 1, O and 0 often were often interchanged.

That sounds about right to me, though an engine cast and assembled in October of '61 would more likely be from a '62 model year truck.

Longbox55 & tclederman,

I am understanding I have a 61 or 62 passenger car engine that came with a powerglide? So that would mean it had hydraulic lifters unless someone changed them?

TurboGlide was not an option until 57'. I don't recall any I-6's with them and certainly never worked on one in my time with a dealership. They were lousy transmissions and had no scoot even with a hot V8. Much more like a DynaFlow than anything else.
