It could possibly be up to a '62, but my guide cuts off with Passenger car engine codes at '60. There is a casting date near the starter that will help peg the year.

Thanks

| | | | | Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 32 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Dec 2011 Posts: 32 | I can't answer that it would seem possible in the later years that a turbo could have been used. I am still stuck on the fact that I have a 1955 truck with a later engine that came with hydraulic lifters, when I got the truck it would barely run and after major tune up still had dead miss on number 4 cylinder. I got it hot per instructions and removed valve cover to adjust valves and number four intake rocker was off the valve so I adjusted it for solid lifters and it runs like new now, so do I readjust for hydraulics or how can I verify lifter type?
Thanks

When I looked the code up, it only listed it as being used with "Automatic Transmission", but did not specify type. I've rechecked and cross referenced my guides, there are specific listing and codes for the V8 with the Turboglide, and no listings for 235 with any automatic other than Powerglide in Passenger.

I think that someone posted information that confirmed that a Powerglide was used on a truck sometime between 60-62. It was not clear what lifters were used.

The only legible number is J 11 right above the starter, is this a good date code? The other code is FI0I7B on the pad behind the distributor. If you look at the picture of the pad the only numerics are the zero and the seven, did they use an I for a 1?
Thanks

F1017B in 1961 would mean:
F = Flint, MI assembly plant 10 = October 17 = 17th B = Regular engine (235) in a passenger car equipped with a Powerglide transmission
I and 1, O and 0 often were often interchanged.

I am understanding I have a 61 or 62 passenger car engine that came with a powerglide? So that would mean it had hydraulic lifters unless someone changed them?

Larry Yes | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | TurboGlide was not an option until 57'. I don't recall any I-6's with them and certainly never worked on one in my time with a dealership. They were lousy transmissions and had no scoot even with a hot V8. Much more like a DynaFlow than anything else. | | |
