Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 33 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Aug 2011 Posts: 33 | Last year I picked up a 1953 Chevy 6400. I thought at the time it had a 235. The water pump needed replaced so I went to the local NAPA at got a water pump for a 235. It looked just like the one I pulled off. Later I scraped 60 years worth of grime off the bottom of the block and found the casting numbers. The numbers are for a 261 from 54-55.
Do I need to re-replace the water pump and thermostat?
Thanks in advance. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | The 1953 216/235 and 54/55 235/261 water pumps may be interchanged.

I really didn't want to spend anymore money there. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 | The 1954-55 1st 261 water pump has a larger outlet for the lower hose than a 235 pump, but the 235 pump will work fine as your radiator is most likely set up for the 235 hose size.
