I am cleaning up a '53 cab to replace the wrecked one on the Blue Funk.

On the toe pan, at the place where the right fender and left where the parking brake bracket attach, I removed strips of some sort of black substance similar to asphalt.

For future reference when I put things back together again, I need to know: What are these strips?

sounds to me like something that would hold the asbestos insulation in place, my 55 has the same stuff on the toe board and it's a real pain to clean off.

I just set up a booth and borrowed a sand blaster from a friend to deal with asphalt in my fender wells. Why? Because paint will not stick to it. Not cheap paint like rustoleum or spendy 2 part epoxy primer I've tried both. It will look ok untill you hit it with a pressure washer or comppressed air and then it will lift like a page of paper. I've tried grinding, sanding, carb cleaner and reducer but that s*#t gets deep into the metal and won't let go. The sand blaster is doing the job great and is at least as fast as grinding and sanding and I won't have to worry about paint failure inside the fenders anymore. Just a warning as you start to dig it out that covering it up with paint won't make you happy down the road

...in the event the strips shown is not what your looking for you can use strips of roofing felt. I suggest the #30 weight rather than the 15lb felt.

If it is the asphalt/tar material that held the sound deadener to my toeboard, I had to use tar remover, paint remover, and kerosene to get it off.

I had no trouble removing the strips, only using a putty knife and then wire brushing off what remained.

Alvin's suggestion, of using roofing felt, sounds like an interesting tact to take- roofing felt on a toe pan!
