At 7:30am I thought I would get up before my kids did and ran to the garage to drop my 235 back into the 49. I had everything ready to go, I thought it would be a piece of cake... HA!

First I forgot to install the front mount shield after I had the motor already in place... whoops... up it came, shield installed, back in.

Looked pretty good until I got underneath to see how the rear transmission mounts sat on the cross member.

<Rear Mount Passenger>

<Rear mount driver>

As you can see - they don't sit flat on the cross member at all.

I purchased new mounts as my old ones looked NOTHING like what I've seen on others trucks, also it had zero rubber.

<New & Old Mounts>

The old mounts are at the top. Considerably smaller.
Has anyone seen my old style rubberless mounts?

Should I reinstall the old, or grind down the new?

I don't understand the purpose of the rubber on the new mount when it looks like the engine rests on the metal part of the mount anyway....

Please advise - I have an engine lift / truck sitting in my garage door that the wife wont appreciate!
<uh oh>

Here is some information on your solid mounts (Utility mounts). I am unsure why the others fit so poorly unless they have extra rubber cast on them (possible with repros). I would try grinding a bit off them until they fit? The solid mounts were designed for HD continuous use applications and may have more vibration potential.

Thank you Brad!

Makes sense, Canadian truck as well. I'm going to put the solid mounts back on, the vibration can't be any worse than it was with my 1/2 baked front motor mount.

Looks like I have a set of rubber mounts to sell! smile

If you can get the rubber mounts to fit, your truck will be much quieter! Much!

When I got my one ton, the rear mounts were made of angle iron and hockey pucks. The difference between the hard pucks, and runner mounts was tremendous.

But, as you say, it can't be worse than it was! Hahaha. Much easier to leave it as is.

It sure does look wider... mine are RockAuto purchased.

Does yours have rubber between the cross member and the mount itself?? Mine does not. I fail to see the insulative quality of the ones I bought.

Agreed Mr. Lang - but I think I'll be ok with the old. I've been trying to keep the truck as Canadian as I can with it's quaint little differences. I like the bit of history that Brad pointed me to!

Hy Bigtonka, I have noticed over the years that there seem to be two different rear engine mounts for the 47 - 53 series trucks, not including the spring type mounts. Most of my trucks are larger, and use the mounts shown in your "new mounts" pic's, but I have found some mounts that are smaller and sit closer to the engine. Before you start modifying your mount, check and see if the bolt hole in the mount lies up with the hole in the crossmember. I think the mounts in your picture are for 3/4 ton and larger trucks, at Jim Carters that mount is their p/n ME217, their p/n for the 1/2 ton mount is ME218, and I believe that is the mount that will fit your application, hope that helps.

Hi 3B,

As it stands, the bolt holes all line up. I have the bolts inserted in the mounts in these pics, in the first pic you can see it coming down through in the gap!

My truck is a 1 ton, it is the larger truck.

Hy Bigtonka, I did not realise your truck was a one ton, on those mounts, at least the factory ones, on the bottom the outermost edge was rolled/angled up to clear the rising crossmember, perhaps that feature was left out of the repro mount. By the way Anchor Industries still produces that mount, their p/n is 2073, and I can purchase them through my f.l.a.p.s..

There is a rolled up edge - but not nearly enough.

I have a bit of time before the mount is inaccessible (like years!) as I do body work. For now I've installed the mounts that were on it, I'm going to start it up and see how it feels.

Thanks for all the info.

The "old" style - metal to metal, spring cushioned - mounts were also the standard mount used on all of the CMP trucks made by Chev/GMC for the Canadian military 1939-45. The profile of the crossmember also looks familiar. (One exception I know of is the 3 ton 6x6 that had the 270 CID instead of the 216 and used two stubs from the frame rather than a full crossmember and rubber rear mounts - I think that other CMP with the 270 were similar). If you need new "hard" mounts and springs, kits do show up on e-bay from time to time.

Thanks Grant - I already have them - its what was on my truck when I pulled the 216 off.

Is anyone still having issues with the mounts from Jim Carter? I ordered the ME217 rear mounts for my 41 1/2 ton. I called them and they said that the ME217 should work. The originals that I have are not flat on the cross member. They are curved.

Searching through the forums on here, it says something about the ME218 which is not as wide. I think they still have an issue with the catalog....
