| | | | Joined: May 2012 Posts: 574 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2012 Posts: 574 | a friend of mine has a 1948-49 (not sure, no body) truck with the original driveline in it that he's gonna let me have, i went to check it out the other day and it appears to be a 1 ton truck with the original 216ci with the 4 speed on the floor, BUT i looked at the tranny and it is real small compared to the transmission in my 55 second series 1.5 ton, so i checked the shift pattern and it only had 3 gears + reverse,no 4th gear. i figure that one of the gears is stuck but before i assume the tranny needs work i figured that since its a 1 ton i thought i should ask in this section because y'all deal with them.....i've only dealt with big bolts

At least not in 48-49. The last top-loader 3-speed was in 47 1/2-tons.
Do you have a SM-420 4-speed in your 55-2nd? With reverse to the left and down? If so you know that you have to push against a spring to get it to go to the left...
The 50 3/4-ton I bought in 03 had sat for so long in neutral that it wouldn't go in any gear due to rust and corrosion built up on the shift rails/shafts.

The small rod is pulled up to allow it to go in reverse. If that is a 3-speed it has been swapped. I think... Can you find any stamped numbers on the trans?
