I usually buy the filters for my '53 powerglide engine by the case, so it has been a while since I purchased a filter. I am getting down to the end of my supply, so I thought I would check into availability. The last filters I bought were NAPA 1100. I was at NAPA and asked to see one of these filters. The diameter of the old filter was 4.5 inches. The new filter is 4 inches. The included gasket was the correct size. Checked at Carquest. Same thing. I think both filters are made by WIC.

The smaller filter would fit fine, but I think the older filter would have more filter medium in it.

Curious to know if there is a better choice of filter available rather than the WIC/NAPA/Carquest?

Some of those bypass filters are Fram & some are AC. They used to take different cartriges. Now they have consolidated them into one part #. I dont know if any of the other brands have separate #s for those.

A Fram C4P is 4.5 diameter

The wix 51006 they just sold me to replace it is only 4 inch diameter .
I'm going to try to find a Fram
They claim it crosses.

I could not find the fram C4P locally.
I ordered 3 from rockauto.com.

Thanks for the tip. Ordered 4 myself. Seemed to be just a few cents difference in shipping 4 as shipping 1. Cheaper than Much the WIC filter from NAPA or CarQuest.

Got the Fram filters from RockAuto today. Right size, right price.
came with two gaskets, same outside diameter, but one wider than the other.

Do you remember the part number of the smaller filter. just tried a wix 51006. the supplied gaskets were to large the filter was about 1" too long for the canister. The filter I took out measured 3.75" diameter and was 4" tall. the engine was in a 54 4100.

Sounds like you have an even smaller filter than the WIX 51006, NAPA 1100 or Fram C4p. What is the number/brand on the filter you took out? Might try to cross that.

So far I haven't found a number either stamped or printed on filter, I tried the 51006 again and just succeeded in getting it stuck and ruined it getting it back out. Maybe in the light of day after it drains overnight I will find a number. both of the gaskets supplied with the 51006 are too large for the top of canister. Every site I've been to recomends the 51006, it's eqivelant or something larger.

maby you have a non-standard filter from a different vehicle?

The local jobber came up with AC Filter P 203. The filter appears to fit, the gaskets did not. So tommorrow I'll see about gasket material. I measured the remote filter on the 38 it is larger than on the 54 motor.No telling what the remote filter set up was actually designed for. what paint still attached is orange both canister and top.
